how to measure an arch window

You need to find diameter and radius of your arch window for perfect measurement as it is nothing but a semi circle.You have to use ladders to reach the arch windows as they are located at a height.Make sure that the ladder is locked properly.After that perform the below steps:



Measure diameter


Fix the measuring tape to the left bottom corner of the arch window and move it till the right bottom corner.The distance on your measuring tape is diameter of the window.


Find center


Put a mark at exactly the middle point of the diameter.This will give you the exact center of your arch window.


Find radius


Use measuring tape to measure the distance between your center and the heighest point on the arch.This distance is the radius of your arch.


Is it perfect arch or oval


Mark eighteen point on the arch circumference at ten degrees apart.Seperately Measure the distance between these points and center and carefully record your observation.The distances will match In case of perfect arch or semi circular window.If the distances are varying then you can assume that your arch is eclipse or oval shape.You can only custom things for your oval windows.



Measurement in case of Outside mount


You have to adjust your radius based on the thickness of outside mount.Add 4 inches to your calculated radius If the thickness of outside mount is 4 inches.Basically the new radius is sum of old radius and thickness of outside mount.


Measurement in case of inside mount


It is similar to the outside mount excepe that the thickness is subtracted from the old radius instead of addition.


Calculate rod length


It is easy to find length of your bendable rod.You just have to multiply your radius to 3.14.It will give you half circumference of your arch.



Tips to take arch measurement


  • Your eye level must be at the same height as bottom of arch.
  • Use erasable marking pen to erase wrong marks
  • You have to use plastic film if your arch does not have horizontal surface.Just fix film from right bottom to left bottom of arch.It will give you diameter of your arch.Make sure that you use very thin film.
  • Note the measurements in a note book.
  • Recreate the arch window on your chart paper using the measurements taken.It is same as drawing semi circle using ruler.
  • Carefully mark the window number in case you have more than one arch window.
  • You can use arch measuring device for better results.
  • Use two ladders and take help of other person if you have wide arches.
