Alternative shutter Styles

Along with the standard types, specialty shutter manufacturers offer a fairly wide range of alternative panel styles. The arch-top, or "lazy arch," shutter is a popular decorative style used for arched win-dows or to add flair to square or rectangular windows.

Shutter doors with fabric panels instead of louvers can include fabrics that coordinate with other patterns and colon in the room. Louvers can also be combined with solid panels for a more traditional look. Some solid-panel styles have decorative cutouts with motifs such as hearts, moons, and stars, or with detailed open work.

Most shutters are hinged, either with multiple panels that unfold accordion-style or as single-panel types that are hinged only at the sides of the window. The latter is a typical style for plantation shutters. You can also find slid-ing shutters and complete shutter sets with integral sills. Shutters that cover only the lower portion of a window are called "cafe-style?' This popular configuration offers pri-vacy when the shutters are closed while still letting in light from the upper window area.
